The Startup Mindset: 10 Essential Habits of Successful Men and Women

If you're an entrepreneur or thinking about becoming one, one of your biggest fears is no doubt the fear of failure. When you consider that half of all American small businesses do not survive their fifth year in operation, that can make your fear all the more real.
However, that statistic also means that half of them are still thriving after five years. So what separates the successful entrepreneur from the one who fails? It isn't just sheer luck and a great product or service.
Nearly every successful person, whether it's an entrepreneur or a world-famous celebrity, has habits and a mindset that separates them from other people. Here are ten essential habits of successful men and women that you can start doing today.
A positive mindset is everything when it comes to achieving success. Successful people believe in themselves and they never, ever allow their thoughts and beliefs to tell them otherwise.
Thoughts and statements such as "I'm not good enough", "I'm not very smart", and "No one will ever take me seriously" are simply not in a successful person's vocabulary.
Instead, these statements are replaced with positive affirmations such as, "I'm smart enough to do this", "The right people and resources are coming to me" and "My business is a smashing success." This positive energy contributes to a winning mindset.
In line with habit number one, successful people know that it does not matter if other people do not believe in them and their dream. They believe in themselves and that's all they need.
Do you at least believe that's possible to succeed? Do you believe in your business plan? Then you're already halfway there on the road to seeing it become a reality.
Successful people do not wallow in their mistakes, play the victim, and blame others for their setbacks. Instead, they try to learn the lesson involved and figure out a way to do it better next time.
They also do not live in the past. They keep moving forward and they also realize their power lies in the present moment, not in a period of time that is gone forever.
Everyone is going to encounter setbacks in life, but successful people don't let disappointments hold them back.
No one can really succeed if they keep putting things off that need to be taken care of. Many successful people make a to-do list and aim to check off as many items as possible on a daily basis.
Procrastination not only prevents you from moving forward with your dream, but research shows it may also be bad for your brain. It can contribute to depression and low self-esteem.
One of the best ways to thwart procrastinating is to focus on getting smaller tasks done first. The sense of accomplishment has a snowball effect and will encourage you to knock larger ones off your list.
People who are serious about their goals and dreams enjoy learning from others who have achieved the level of success they're after. They attend seminars for entrepreneurs, join networking groups, read books by successful people, and watch YouTube videos. They observe and learn as much as they can from other entrepreneurs.
Immersing yourself in knowledge and lessons learned from other successful people is going to permeate your energy and set you up for success. Connecting with a professional who coaches and teaches entrepreneurs how to be successful is also a valuable move.
In that same vein, the company you keep can have a profound effect on your mindset and beliefs. If you continuously surround yourself with people who are negative and don't have anything supportive to say about your goals, that can really bring you down.
However, if you have a few cheerleaders in your life or can spend time with other successful and positive people, it can really motivate you to succeed. Be choosy about who you spend free time with if you're an entrepreneur.
You can't win the lottery if you don't purchase a ticket. Likewise, you can't get a shot at winning at the game of life unless you take some risks.
Entrepreneurs know all too well that they're taking a risk when they decide to launch their own business. However, they realize it's far worse to not take the risk and live with regret for the rest of their life. As Dr. Wayne Dyer once said, "Don't die with the music still in you."
The successful person knows that before they can take care of others, they need to take care of themselves first. This may involve getting a good night's sleep, eating a healthy diet, working out regularly, and setting aside time to meditate.
When their body is properly fueled up and cared for, they have the energy to tackle their to-do list and keep working towards their dream.
What do you wish to accomplish in three months, six months, or a year from now? If you don't have concrete goals in mind you could end up somewhere you very well do not want to be.
Successful people set milestones and goals for themselves and their business venture, to help keep them on track. They also practice good time management skills, to make sure projects and important tasks are done by the deadlines.
Too many people are slogging through the workweek in a job they really do not care for. Successful people have determined what their passion is and have found ways to make money from it.
Don't know what you love to do? Make notes of hobbies or activities that put you "in the zone" and are things you could literally do all day. This will guide you in the right direction of a new career or business.
By following these ten habits, you can be more like the successful men and women that you look up to. Forming these habits and practicing them on a daily basis will bring you much closer to your entrepreneurial dreams.
